You may not be a smug twat, but you are still a consumer whore.
I recently spotted a woman pushing a baby stroller through a NYC Whole Foods Market with one of these bags in hand:
This bag is in response to the Anya Hindmarch “I’m Not a Plastic Bag” trend of 2007. Said bags were sold for approximately 15£ (about $6.75 at the time), but due to their overwhelming popularity, they were seen at an upwards of $400 on ebay.
Though fabsugar.com may describe these bags as being “fashionably PC,” they’re certainly not “ecologically PC.” -If political correctness can even be used in such a sense. There is a plethora of information on the internet about how unsustainable these bags are. A quick listing of some concerns:
-manufacture in China, shipment to U.K, then shipment to U.S.
-toxic petroleum inks
-non-Organic (probably chlorine) bleached base
From cradle to cradle, these bags have a hefty and toxic ecological footprint.
I wouldn’t classify Marissa V.’s bag as greenwashing, persay. However, it is an interesting response to a pseudo-green product that brings to light a more raw undertone, attacking fashionista personas. If you bought these, I’d say, “Nice sass-back… but you’re still a consumer whore.”
